Comments may be enabled in your blog. You just have to go to the discussion settings page.
When enabled, you have different moderation options. Read them really carefully and choose the ones you want.

What I would really do is check the ‘email me whenever’ settings, so that I get email when someone posts a comment or a comment is held for moderation.

Oh yes! That’s a good idea. But I would only check the first one. The second option (when a comment is held for moderation) is likely to cause a great number of emails received. I do not want that.

Great! Comments are a nice functionality which allows to have feedback from your readers. I love them!

Yes it’s right, even though you must take some time to configure them to prevent from getting spam.

One thing you can do is to fill in the comment moderation and disallowed comment key settings.
