Patterns

When properly designed and planned, design patterns—small, reusable modules—help your responsive layout reach more devices (and more people) than ever.

Ethan Marcotte—Responsive design: patterns & principles

In WordPress we mainly have three types of patterns:

  • Remote patterns
  • Theme patterns
  • User patterns

The first type of patterns is for the advanced user, to get inspiration from or share your expertise with. You can see some examples here.

The second ones, the theme patterns, are the little modules the web designer delivers his/her theme with. They are for you to duplicate to make your own ones. They live in the theme folder and may be used as a backup copy just in case you brake something.

The third ones are the most interesting patterns because they are your own patterns and are an important part of your content. And let me tell you, your content is the most important thing of your blog or web page.

The DualTone provides the least amount of patterns as theme patterns, and suggests you duplicate and customize them to make them your own, so you can finally unregister the ones provided by theme and rely on your own.
